When Coal Is Over

In this Oct. 19, 2014 photo, former coal miner Tommy Walters, 66, waits his turn while playing pool in his bar, one of only two still operating in the area in Cumberland, Ky. Walters, a 17-year coal mine veteran, had left home numerous times over the years looking for work out of state as the opportunities for coal miners at home fluctuated. “It bothers you, it hurts you that one time this town was booming,” said Walters. “If I knew back then what this town would be like today, I never would have come back.” (AP Photo/David Goldman)
