Archivist’s Update: Mahatma Gandhi

Neatly arranged in a corner of the room in New Delhi’s Birla House Feb. 6, 1948, where he died and lay in state, are the effects of Mahatma Gandhi. A garlanded photo of the assassinated Indian spiritual leader is in center of his large bolster and mattress. In front of photo are two small prayer books. Immediately in front of the mattress is Gandhi’s charka (spinning wheel) is right corner of mattress is Burmese hat, gift to Gandhi but received after his death.
